The SİMURG Team of Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU), an academic stakeholder of TEKNOFEST — the world’s largest aviation, space and technology festival — achieved first place in the “Tourism Technologies” category at the TEKNOFEST KARADENİZ (Black Sea) competitions held this year in Samsun, with its augmented reality–based project titled “The Eye of Zeugma.”
Through the project prepared by the “SİMURG” team, composed of students from HKU’s Computer Engineering department, museums and similar historical and touristic sites in Gaziantep were modelled and made virtually navigable through augmented reality. The project, which took the name “The Eye of Zeugma” because it initially focused on the Zeugma Museum, was expanded in scope over time, resulting in the development of an effective virtual reality application. It is anticipated that the application could create a significant opportunity, particularly for individuals who are unable to visit such sites in person.

The SİMURG Team, which won first place for HKU in the Tourism Technologies category, received its awards — consisting of a medal, a plaque and a cheque for 20,000 Turkish Lira — from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at a ceremony held in Samsun.

HKU Rector Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli congratulated all the students who took part in TEKNOFEST as well as the SİMURG team that came first in the “Tourism Technologies” category, stating that they would always continue to support all young people who contribute to the development and future of the country. Noting that the project teams participating in TEKNOFEST worked with great harmony and dedication, Prof. Dr. Türkay Dereli said: “I wholeheartedly congratulate our young people who, by participating in TEKNOFEST KARADENİZ, illuminate the future of Türkiye with their ideas and projects, and I thank all our guests who visited our stand — which is our own original design and production — as well as our students and staff who devoted themselves wholeheartedly to their work.”
